Sea Salt and Balsamico Vinegar Chips

Bin mal gespannt.
Die Chips grummeln in meinem Bauch. Lebt wohl, Ihr gaumenkitzelnden Knusperstückchen.

May 31: The storm before the calm

You know how they give a death row inmate a "last meal" before he is executed? Well, in the movies they do, anyway. That's what today is like for me. The day before June first, when I'm recomitting myself to getting my body into better shape. So, I'm allowing myself to be even less cautious than I've been on the rest of my vacation. S made croissants and rolls for breakfast, which I wasted no time smothering in wonderful marmalades and spreads - the kind that are run-of-the-mill, every day things for Germans, but which Americans find absolutely fascinating and superbly delectable. Of course I savored every last bite. And overdid it a bit. We have our flight back to New York in a few hours' time, and I have found that on days that I travel, particularly trans-Atlantic trips, my nutrition ain't so great. So I guess this will be that day where my body really feels the tipping point (as if it hasn't been waving a white flag for days) and empowers me with the dedication and commitment I'll need to get through the first day, then the next, then the next...

One thing I want to think about in the next month:
I've found that I've grown somewhat dependent on coffee - somehow on this vacation I've observed my body responding physically to it. I crave it when I wake up. Having a cup is all I can focus on - even before getting a shower, washing my face, brushing my teeth. I feel so much better and more energetic once I've had some. I know that's kind of the point, but my body generally treats coffee as a basic input, like oxygen. I've never had to worry about sleepless nights or drinking "too much" coffee - my body doesn't know the meaning of the concept. I love coffee. More than most other beverages. But I'm worried about being dependent on any substance...I want to have my "old" relationship with coffee back. Now, I'm not suggesting that I cut coffee out as part of this exercise (dropping alcohol for a full week, including the weekend, will be test enough of my commitment). But I wonder if there's a way that I can experiment with it, maybe not drink so much of it... something. Like oxygen, will I freak out if I don't have it?

Grocery shopping and goal setting

So, I've completed the "clean slate" grocery shopping. Lots of veggies and fruit, brown rice, lean protein, etc. I'm trying out a gluten free diet for E to help him with some health things, so I'm hopeful it will help me in Part One - Detox.

I'm committing right here, in writing, that I won't drink alcohol for at least one week. Quite a turn from the way the past ten days have gone. When one wakes up hung over four or five days of your ten-day vacation, I think that one's body deserves a bit of a break. Probably a break longer than one week, but let's start by setting realistic goals. Is it sad that one week feels like a "stretch goal"? I thought so, too.

Speaking of goals... S and I promised that we wouldn't set "rules" (although I already used the term "ground rules"). We would set "goals" - it's a much more positive word, no? Here are my personal goals:

1. Be honest. Write things down. I've done Weight Watchers (several times), Atkins (as a vegetarian!), South Beach, Zone, Body for Life. I know that it doesn't matter so much *what* I eat as *how much* I eat. Simple as that. The best way to know how much I'm eating is to track it, honestly.

2. Stick to morning workouts. I know myself well enough by now to know that it will be painful to get to the gym much beyond 10 AM. And, since I'm an office girl, that means hitting the sweat routine early.

3. Be realistic, and not too hard on myself. Whenever I start a new weight loss program I have these lofty goals... "I'm going to lose 50 pounds in 2 months, just like those people on TV" or "There's no way I won't stick to this plan". But the reality is that moods are fluid; "Lust" comes and goes; and I know that I'm going to need help now and again to stay on plan and meet my weight loss goals (which I will publish on June 1st).

These are the most important keys to success, based on my experience, and a good start.

That's all for now... more tomorrow.

Seelenregen

Ich bin traurig. Ich möchte essen. Schokolade.
Ich werde mir also etwas Anderes überlegen, etwas un-schokoladiges, was mir hilft, mich in meinem Traurigsein zu stabilisieren.

Getting ready

So, we started this blog for a few reasons. One - we both wanted to lose some weight. We both wanted to support each other, but we live in different countries, so wanted to find a way to do it long-distance. Since Sonne and I are both pretty expressive verbally, we thought why not try blogging? We can not only support each other, but maybe offer some support or inspiration to others who are going through what we're going through?

Given that we're at the end of May, we thought choosing June first would be a clean start. We're together in Germany now, but I'll be back in New York by June 1st and not on vacation any more, so it will be easier for us to get back to our routines and healthy eating.

To that end, we have agreed some ground rules for one another:
1. Write it, then bite it. Through experience (having successfully lost, regained, lost, somewhat regained) I know that writing down what I eat keeps me honest and helps me make the right choices. We'll be using fitday.com to track what we eat
2. Exercise. At least 4-5 times per week. Try a new exercise - class, style, etc., to keep things fresh.
3. Drink water. Tons. Daily.
4. Blog daily. We're doing this for each other, but also for ourselves, to ensure we're really experiencing the process, and - hopefully - making it permanent

June first, you can't get here fast enough. Although you're the end of my vacation you're also the beginning of my "jump start"!

Kaffee? Fett? Rumsitzen? Beweg' Deinen Hintern! Bring mich in Schwung!"
Oh Mann.

3 Kamele? Seufz. Gute Nacht.
