Just when you think you know everything...
So it's been a few days since I've published a post. I've been a bit lazy, I suppose. There aren't really any excuses. S, my partner-in-crime, is in "vacation" mode and not writing any blog entries so I have to say that contributed to my laziness. OH well, I'm here now.
I went to see a nutritionist last night. I decided that I needed a little extra help in losing the last few pounds I need to take off. And by "few" I guess I should say "about 20". As a girl who's done Weight Watchers, Atkins, the Zone, you name it, I like to think that I know a bit about nutrition. But here are some things that I learned from meeting with the nutritionist, Marissa:
1. I eat too fast. I should take 10-15 minutes, at least, to eat my meal. Try to be the last one to finish eating in a group.
2. Give up the gum. I have been using gum to keep my mouth busy so I don't eat actual food, but what I'm doing to my stomach is releasing acids that don't have any food to digest. As a result, my tummy isn't appreciative of it - I also am taking in way too many sugar alcohols.
3. I need to stop measuring. This one is going to be TOUGH. A WW veteran, I've switched to FitDay, and take special pride in the precision with which I measure and record my food intake and exercise. However, that's created a bit of a fixation; an obsession, if you will. And it's got to stop.
So I'm going to journal in a different way: write down what I eat, and when I eat it. I'm also writing down how long I take to eat a meal, to make myself a bit more aware of my body's "satisfaction" signals. I'm also going to journal - both here and elsewhere - more about the mind game of all of this. So we'll see how that goes.
More to come.

vage Waage ade
Ja!
3 KILO ABGENOMMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JA! HÜPF! FREU! TIRILIER!

Cardiovascular Goddess
So, my friend C has done this VO2 testing to find her ideal heart rate for exercising, so I talked to Ed about it. Usually it's kind of a "fancy" test where they put a mask on you and figure out absolutely everything about your exercise threshold. What we did was a bit simpler - no mask, just a treadmill.
We (ha! I say "we" but it was really Me. Ed was just standing there) started out at an incline of 10%, speed of 1.7 MPH. Every 3 minutes we went to a higher incline and faster speed - this was to see when I would get to my "calculated" maximum heart rate (based on my age), and then we'd figure out an ideal heart rate range for me to work out in.
The test went on for about 14 minutes, which is where I hit my max, and then four minutes of cooldown. Ed said that my cardiovascular fitness is EXCELLENT!
And then he said he's been letting me rest too long between sets. So you can see now how there is somewhat of a downside to your personal trainer having this data.
On the other hand, I'm looking forward to seeing how this knowledge improves my workout and my FAT shedding!

New Woman
The first week "getting back into things" is always tough. It seems that the very first day is the easiest, because your resolve and focus are brand new. Maybe that second day is as easy. But then you start to feel "real life" kick in. When you leave the safety of your home - which has no cupcakes, brownies, potato chips, etc - it's a bit more difficult to keep up the good habits.
Add to this the unique "challenges" shall we say, that a woman's hormones present. This week was particularly brutal in that regard. I wanted red meat, I wanted chocolate, I wanted salt - and damnit, if I wasn't going to have it then my body would make me pay.
Last night, a friend came to town and wanted to watch the NHL finals. Instead of being boring and watching at our apartment, we went to a sports bar, along with another friend. I really, really wanted a burger - I had been feeling hungry and had been struggling to stay on track all day. So I ordered a burger - a turkey burger. With fries. And a beer. And it was the. Best. Turkey Burger. Perhaps ever.
And you know what?
I feel awesome today. I went back in and added the calories for what I ate, and while I was about 1,000 calories over budget (including the snacks I had when I got home before going out - oops), it's not the end of the day and it's certainly not the end of my getting back on track. I'm moving on.
Today I've had some yummy kashi cereal with fresh strawberries and almond milk, with peanut butter toast. I have physical therapy later this morning and plan to pick up a delicious salad from Pret a Manger (my favorite: chicken and avocado, full of yummy Omega 3!), then go to the office. I'll make sure I've packed snacks, because I am going to spin class at 6:30 this evening - woohoo!! Tomorrow I train with Ed again.

Salat statt Pizza
;-)
Es bleibt spannend.

Hungry
Hungry. That's what I am. All the time. I don't get it. I'm eating enough calories, I'm balancing my carbs, protein, and fats. I'm eating *plenty* of fiber.
So why, then, am I hungry constantly?
I need some nutrition inspiration... it's been tough for me to not be hungry. What can I do better? What can I change up?
====
I worked out with Ed this morning. First we did a VO2 test to double check my ideal heart rate zone. It's 155-160 bpm, supposedly my optimum training range. Also in this test Ed figured out that I'm in outstanding cardiovascular shape - my heart recovers like a champ, so he can give me a shorter rest period between sets. Great. :( We did some ab work, the likes of which were so torturous I didn't know what I'd done to make him want to punish me like that! I suppose it's for my own good. Right?
I've been working out pretty solidly this week. On Monday I trained in the morning then went to spinning in the evening; on Tuesday I ran half an hour at 6MPH, 1% incline; and today worked out with Ed. I considered spinning this evening and may, but I may just give my legs a rest and spin tomorrow evening.
More to come...

Hmm.
Morgen wird es bestimmt wieder leichter. Hoffentlich.

Post-Weekend Update
So... I think I wrote earlier that instead of a no-booze embargo of one week, I would allow myself a couple of glasses of wine with dinner on Saturday. Well, I did that... and a bit more. But I had a great workout on Saturday and did a ton of walking on Sunday. And my nutrition was in check on Sunday.
I think it's a bit...self-defeating...to rule out one thing entirely, especially given that I'm only in NYC for 17 more days! And one of my BFFs is here. So - just keep it in check with the booze, and don't slack on the working out - in fact, ramp up the workouts.
But today is Monday and I'm tracking my food, I worked out with my trainer, and I'm going spinning tonight. I'm feeling good!
So bring it on, Week. I can take it.

Sommer, Sonne, Dranbleiben

Also: Weiter so!

Travel Recap
Just wanted to post a note about my second day on the road - I ate very healthfully, logging about 1,700 calories - definitely a deficit there. I got in after 1 AM, but dutifully got up at 5:30 to go work out with my trainer! Woohoo!!!
Weekend and Control
It seems a miracle that I could have gone four whole days - 96 hours - without drinking wine. But look, I did it! Nutrition wise, I've done well - but I've been pretty hungry, so I need to look at what I've been eating. Maybe not enough protein at the right time of day? We'll see.
I'm having a yummy breakfast as I write this, whole grain puffs with blueberries and strawberries and almond milk, with a mug of my light & slim tea from Bremen. YUM.
When on a weight loss mission, my biggest challenge has always been, and will continue to be, being around others who aren't also on a weight loss mission. This will happen later tonight at my friend N's place. Our friend C is coming to town as well, and we're going to grill at N's apartment. I told myself I could have a glass or two of wine with dinner, but plan not to have too much. And, of course, I will write this all down :)
My calories were a bit on the high side yesterday - still less than I burned, though. Went to see Iron Man 2 with E and had a small bag of popcorn. Sadly I fell asleep several times during the movie, but it was (I think) pretty fun to watch!
I'm going to a spin class at 12:30 today, and am looking forward to that. I've booked my trainer for three days a week the next two weeks, and the movers come to pick up our stuff the 24th. Oy!

I can do it!
Tag 4.

Sushi
I got to Oakland, CA, last night at about 7PM. After having been in Germany for ten days and just having one full day to adjust to Eastern time before being thrust into Pacific time, my body was understandably a bit annoyed. Add to that the fact that my "extra leg room seat" on the flight wouldn't recline because it's in an Emergency Exit row, and... well, you get the picture.
I brought along some healthy snacks, resolving not to eat too much so I could have a "normal" dinner in Oakland and then go to bed early. Unfortunately, my stomach had different ideas - it was growling fiercely hungry, so I grabbed a turkey sandwich (mustard only, thankyouverymuch) and wolfed it down before my flight. Had a couple other snacks on the plane, planning to have a little sushi at this place I'd found on Yelp.
I found this site with nutrition information on sushi, which was immensely helpful when I entered my food details this morning: http://www.sushifaq.com/sushi-calories.htm.
June 2 recap:
Calories in: 2,237
Workout: Spin class, calories burned ~500
Alcohol consumed: 0; Jen 2, Booze 0
Goal for today: get through another day on the road eating healthfully.

Kondensmilch
Juhuuu!

Bin mal sehr gespannt.
Hanging in there,
Sonja

Day One Recap, and on the road again...
So, yesterday was a good first day. I struggled with being hungry a lot, but when your body has taken in tons of calories over ten days (and a couple of weeks before that), the shock has got to be kind of crazy.
Here is the recap:
Calories
Goal: 1,500 - 2,000
Actual: 1,780
Workout
Elliptical, 30 minutes. Calories burned ~300
Alcohol
Goal: 0 drinks consumed
Actual: 0 drinks consumed. Jen 1, Booze 0
Hunger level
Hm, that was a tough one. Was hungry a fair amount... but hope that it gets better with time.
Heading to CA for work today, for an overnight trip, and planning to eat healthily on the road. Have packed healthy snacks and will ensure I grab something for the plane ride both ways. "If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail"
Bring it on, Day Two.

The longest workout... and new beginnings
I didn't get enough sleep last night. Despite being utterly exhausted from the flight back to the US, and the fact that my body knew it was up way past its bedtime, I stayed up until 11 PM. Dawdling, mostly. As expected, I woke up at 3 AM, 4 AM, and 5 AM, just a few moments earlier than I'd planned. I made some tea (instead of coffee), this "Light and Slim" tea I got in Germany, it was actually yummy.
I hit the gym for a workout to celebrate June First, spending 30 minutes on the Octane elliptical trainer. It was the... longest... workout... ever. I looked down at the clock thinking I'd only 5 or so minutes left, and I'd only done 10 minutes. Ugh. But, I powered through. I saw my trainer there, too, and plan to work out with him this Friday and then 2-3 times per week for the rest of the month. I'm really looking forward to that, actually.
I made breakfast when I got home - sprouted grain toast with two eggs and a pear. And I made some coffee, but not as much as I usually do. One cup today - we'll see how that goes! I tracked this all in my food journal.
So I said that I'd post my weight loss goals today. Here goes: I want to lose 25-30 pounds by the end of September. That's not too outrageous, right? I can totally do this!
Day One: workout, done. Food tracking, going well. Alcohol, none (well, it's not even 8 AM so... maybe report on that officially tomorrow). Mood: good, positive.
More to come!

Sea Salt and Balsamico Vinegar Chips
Bin mal gespannt.
Die Chips grummeln in meinem Bauch. Lebt wohl, Ihr gaumenkitzelnden Knusperstückchen.

May 31: The storm before the calm
You know how they give a death row inmate a "last meal" before he is executed? Well, in the movies they do, anyway. That's what today is like for me. The day before June first, when I'm recomitting myself to getting my body into better shape. So, I'm allowing myself to be even less cautious than I've been on the rest of my vacation. S made croissants and rolls for breakfast, which I wasted no time smothering in wonderful marmalades and spreads - the kind that are run-of-the-mill, every day things for Germans, but which Americans find absolutely fascinating and superbly delectable. Of course I savored every last bite. And overdid it a bit. We have our flight back to New York in a few hours' time, and I have found that on days that I travel, particularly trans-Atlantic trips, my nutrition ain't so great. So I guess this will be that day where my body really feels the tipping point (as if it hasn't been waving a white flag for days) and empowers me with the dedication and commitment I'll need to get through the first day, then the next, then the next...
One thing I want to think about in the next month:
I've found that I've grown somewhat dependent on coffee - somehow on this vacation I've observed my body responding physically to it. I crave it when I wake up. Having a cup is all I can focus on - even before getting a shower, washing my face, brushing my teeth. I feel so much better and more energetic once I've had some. I know that's kind of the point, but my body generally treats coffee as a basic input, like oxygen. I've never had to worry about sleepless nights or drinking "too much" coffee - my body doesn't know the meaning of the concept. I love coffee. More than most other beverages. But I'm worried about being dependent on any substance...I want to have my "old" relationship with coffee back. Now, I'm not suggesting that I cut coffee out as part of this exercise (dropping alcohol for a full week, including the weekend, will be test enough of my commitment). But I wonder if there's a way that I can experiment with it, maybe not drink so much of it... something. Like oxygen, will I freak out if I don't have it?

Grocery shopping and goal setting
So, I've completed the "clean slate" grocery shopping. Lots of veggies and fruit, brown rice, lean protein, etc. I'm trying out a gluten free diet for E to help him with some health things, so I'm hopeful it will help me in Part One - Detox.
I'm committing right here, in writing, that I won't drink alcohol for at least one week. Quite a turn from the way the past ten days have gone. When one wakes up hung over four or five days of your ten-day vacation, I think that one's body deserves a bit of a break. Probably a break longer than one week, but let's start by setting realistic goals. Is it sad that one week feels like a "stretch goal"? I thought so, too.
Speaking of goals... S and I promised that we wouldn't set "rules" (although I already used the term "ground rules"). We would set "goals" - it's a much more positive word, no? Here are my personal goals:
1. Be honest. Write things down. I've done Weight Watchers (several times), Atkins (as a vegetarian!), South Beach, Zone, Body for Life. I know that it doesn't matter so much *what* I eat as *how much* I eat. Simple as that. The best way to know how much I'm eating is to track it, honestly.
2. Stick to morning workouts. I know myself well enough by now to know that it will be painful to get to the gym much beyond 10 AM. And, since I'm an office girl, that means hitting the sweat routine early.
3. Be realistic, and not too hard on myself. Whenever I start a new weight loss program I have these lofty goals... "I'm going to lose 50 pounds in 2 months, just like those people on TV" or "There's no way I won't stick to this plan". But the reality is that moods are fluid; "Lust" comes and goes; and I know that I'm going to need help now and again to stay on plan and meet my weight loss goals (which I will publish on June 1st).
These are the most important keys to success, based on my experience, and a good start.
That's all for now... more tomorrow.

Seelenregen
Ich bin traurig. Ich möchte essen. Schokolade.
Ich werde mir also etwas Anderes überlegen, etwas un-schokoladiges, was mir hilft, mich in meinem Traurigsein zu stabilisieren.

Getting ready
So, we started this blog for a few reasons. One - we both wanted to lose some weight. We both wanted to support each other, but we live in different countries, so wanted to find a way to do it long-distance. Since Sonne and I are both pretty expressive verbally, we thought why not try blogging? We can not only support each other, but maybe offer some support or inspiration to others who are going through what we're going through?
Given that we're at the end of May, we thought choosing June first would be a clean start. We're together in Germany now, but I'll be back in New York by June 1st and not on vacation any more, so it will be easier for us to get back to our routines and healthy eating.
To that end, we have agreed some ground rules for one another:
1. Write it, then bite it. Through experience (having successfully lost, regained, lost, somewhat regained) I know that writing down what I eat keeps me honest and helps me make the right choices. We'll be using fitday.com to track what we eat
2. Exercise. At least 4-5 times per week. Try a new exercise - class, style, etc., to keep things fresh.
3. Drink water. Tons. Daily.
4. Blog daily. We're doing this for each other, but also for ourselves, to ensure we're really experiencing the process, and - hopefully - making it permanent
June first, you can't get here fast enough. Although you're the end of my vacation you're also the beginning of my "jump start"!

Kaffee? Fett? Rumsitzen? Beweg' Deinen Hintern! Bring mich in Schwung!"
Oh Mann.

3 Kamele? Seufz. Gute Nacht.
